Case studies

Cases

Small business stories that show what owners changed, what worked, what did not and what you can copy.

Each case study follows one owner through a marketing problem, what they changed and what happened next. Every story ends with a table of what to do and what to skip.

Some of these stories were sent in by members who tried the ideas. Others I made up to show how a fix plays out, step by step. Either way, read the problem first, then copy the fix that fits your business.

FAQ

Get quick answers about the cases.

What is a case study here?

It’s a short story about a small business that changed its words, with the numbers before and after. Each one covers the problem, the fix and the lessons.

Are the case studies real?

Many come from emails my readers send me, shared with permission and with names changed. Cases marked “Example case” show a typical situation, so you never mistake them for real customer endorsements.

How long is each case study?

About 1,000 to 1,200 words, so most take around 5 minutes to read.

Can I share my own story?

Yes, use the Share your story form at the end of any case. If I’d like to publish it, I’ll ask you first and change the names.

Why are the names changed?

Owners share private things like prices and bookings with me. Changing the names keeps them safe, and the lessons stay the same.

Can I copy what worked in a case?

Yes, borrow the steps that fit your business. Your town, prices and customers differ, so test one change at a time.

How do I find a case for my business?

Pick a topic or type what you do in the search box above. You can also start from the businesses list.

Is there a guide that goes with each case?

Yes, most cases link to a guide on the same kind of copy. Learn the method there, then see it at work here.

Do the cases show what didn’t work too?

Yes, every case ends with a table of what worked and what didn’t. The misses are often the most useful part.

How do I get new resources by email?

Use the “Get new resources by email” box beside any case, or join the community.
